Matthew McConaughey revealed that in the late ’90s, right after A Time to Kill made him a household name, he quietly disappeared to Peru under a fake name — Mateo — to figure out who he was without the fame. On the No Magic Pill podcast, he said he needed to “get his feet on the ground” and separate real validation from the Hollywood noise. He spent 22 days off the grid, the first 12 feeling “wonky,” the last 10 grounding him enough to realize he could either stay in that simple life or return home with clarity. Meeting people who only knew him as Mateo — not the actor — helped him reconnect with his identity. Their emotional goodbyes convinced him that who he was at his core had nothing to do with celebrity. McConaughey eventually returned to Hollywood and became an even bigger star, but he still takes solo retreats when he needs to reset. While writing his 2025 book Poems & Prayers, he went off alone to a desert with no electricity, just his diaries, food, water, and tequila. He said these trips always start with guilt and inner “demons,” but around day 12 he hits a breakthrough — a moment of forgiveness, change, and clarity.
