Young Washington got off to a strong start over the Fourth of July weekend, earning $20.8 million at the domestic box office. That makes it Angel Studios' biggest opening ever for a live-action film, beating expectations of around $15 million. The movie, which follows a young George Washington before he became the nation's first president, was especially popular in the Mountain West, Midwest, and Southern states, where it generated about two-thirds of its opening weekend revenue. Audiences gave the film an A CinemaScore, and older moviegoers turned out in large numbers, with nearly half of the audience being 55 or older. Following the impressive debut, director Jon Erwin announced that a sequel titled 1776 is already in development. The follow-up is expected to continue Washington's story during the Revolutionary War.
