A live-action Mary Poppins TV series is in development, but this version plans to go beyond the familiar Disney movie. Instead of remaking the 1964 classic starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, the series would draw from P.L. Travers’ original eight books, exploring the much stranger and more mysterious world of the character. The Mary Poppins in the books is described as more unpredictable, mysterious and even dangerous than the cheerful version audiences know from the Disney film. Her adventures can be magical, surreal and occasionally frightening. The project is being developed by Tom Winchester for Pure Fiction Television, which has optioned the rights from the P.L. Travers estate. The series is still in the very early pitch stage, with Winchester talking to potential showrunners. There have also been early conversations with Disney about possibly getting involved, although nothing has been agreed.
